The popular Mazda2 is extending its range with the introduction of the Mazda2 sedan. The newly introduced sedan features the same highly praised design tone of the hatchback model however the sedan enjoys a more refined and mature look. Also carried over from the hatchback are the dynamic driving characteristics.
“The Mazda2 hatchback has always been a sought after product on our showroom floors and we are pleased to be extending that range with the addition of the sedan. The Mazda2 sedan shares a similar face to that of its hatchback sibling, with a large five-point grille. The side styling is slightly more subtle and refined than that of the hatchback with a single cohesive look. The C-pillar features a forward and downward curve at the bottom of the leading edge to give an impression of sturdy support for inputs from the rear wheel. Also, the trailing edge has a taut downward curve toward the boot lid to maintain the unity essential in a sedan design.
At the back the rear combination lamps feature a clear lens at the periphery and a red portion with inner lenses that give a look of depth for an overall impression of high quality.
There will be four model derivatives on offer: the 1.3 Active; 1.5 Active; 1.5 Dynamic and 1.5 Individual.
The entry level Mazda2 1.3 and 1.5 Active models boast impressive specification levels with features like manually operated air conditioning, remote central locking, power windows front and rear, height adjustable steering wheel, AUX Jack and radio/single CD with MP3 compatibility. Safety features are also impressive with ABS brakes with EBD, dual front airbags and ISOFIX child seat attachments included
The 1.5 Dynamic model receives 15” alloy wheels, body colour door handles and rear deck lid spoiler, front fog lamps, driver information system, leather covered steering wheel and gear knob and audio controls on the steering wheel.
Topping the range is the 1.5 Individual with 16” alloy wheels, automatic air conditioning, curtain airbags front and rear, side airbags and smart start keyless entry.
The 1.3-litre engine boasts a maximum output of 63kW @ 6 000rpm and a torque peak of 122Nm at 3 500rpm, while the 1.5-litre Sequential Valve Timing (S-VT) engine offers 76kW of power at 6 000rpm and a maximum torque of 135Nm at 4 000rpm.
The result is confident and dynamic performance with ample torque delivery and good fuel economy throughout the rev range. The MZR 1.3-litre engine has a New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) fuel consumption figure of 5.8ℓ/100km; similarly the MZR 1.5-litre models return impressive figures with an NEDC measurement of 6.4ℓ/100km.
“The Mazda2 hatchback walked away with the South Africa Car of the Year title in 2008 a testament to the quality, value for money and desirability of the product. The Mazda2 sedan continues on the same path set by its hatch sibling and is sure to impress customers,” explains Doreen Mashinini, Marketing Manager Mazda South Africa.
